Matthew M. Hannafin

Luthier ~ Sandia Park NM

Matthew was born in Wisconsin in 1985 to a musical family. He began playing violin in fifth grade, and as an adult has played with numerous community orchestras and smaller ensembles.

In 2010 he graduated from the violin and guitar making school in Red Wing Minnesota, where he made his first violin under John Reed.

Since then he has worked at shops in Asheville NC and Glasgow Scotland repairing instruments, and making new ones.

In 2022 Matthew opened his own small shop in the East Mountains of New Mexico, between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, where he makes new violins and violas.

Matthew uses traditional hand tools and materials, and models his instruments on the old Italian masters. The varnish used is traditional oil varnish, dried in the sun behind the workshop.

The small workshop in the Sandia mountains is a friendly place for musicians to visit and see instruments coming to life from blocks of wood.

There are usually a few of Matthew’s instruments on hand to try out.
